Basaltic rocks contain a high percentage of ferromagnesian minerals, so geologists also refer to them as mafic (from magnesium and ferrum, the Latin name for iron).
Basaltic rocks make up the ocean floor as well as many of the volcanic islands located within the ocean basins.
Other Compositional Groups As you can see in Figure 4.5, rocks with a composition between granitic and basaltic rocks are said to have an andesitic composition, or intermediate composition, after the common volcanic rock andesite.
